Sahara Bridal, making slow fashion the new Bridal luxury

Sarah, the founder of Sahara Bridal spent much of her twenties travelling the world. Experiencing amazing cultures and places.  There was something that stuck with Sarah about some of her travels. Seeing these incredible pictures of the Sumidero canyon and promising snorkelling in Kota Kinabalu. To find that these breathtaking places and many others had a very sad side to them. In a small river boat you come around a corner of the Sumidero canyon to see wall to wall rubbish floating on top of the water. Snorkelling in Kota Kinabalu hoping to spot a beautiful fish or turtle, only to bump your head into non stop plastic bottles and the glimmer in the water you see is not a parrot fish but a chip packet.

Sarah was determined to make Sahara Bridal as environmentally friendly as possible. That is why Sarah has made it her mission to only use rPET tulle. This stands for recycled Polyethylene Terephthalate (polyester).

Virgin polyester is derived from petroleum (not very luxurious if you ask us). Despite being made from recycled bottles the rPET fabric is SO soft to touch and drapes beautifully. This is because once it is melted down to the same composition as a regular polyester yarn, you would never know that it has been made from recycled products. Getting the luxury feel and look, without adding to the world's plastic.

Sahara Bridal sources our other delicate Bridal fabrics and trims from Australian Bridal Designers discontinued stock. Giving these beautiful fabrics a new life instead of being added to landfill.

Here at Sahara Bridal we strive to be innovative with ways that we can be more sustainable. We will continue to educate ourselves and hopefully the wider Australian Bridal Industry on the availability of these sustainable options. This is also why we are ‘made to order’ to ensure minimal wastage and so that every Bride piece has been thoughtfully hand crafted especially for you.

We believe that slow fashion and handmade designs are the new luxury. In the words of Rahul Mishra “Luxury means something that is rare. But in 2021, the definition has become more progressive. It also encompasses that which is environmentally neutral, socially beneficial and culturally sustainable”. Sahara Bridal couldn’t agree more with Rahul’s statement and ethos for his Couture designs.

The fashion and Bridal industries have a long way to go when it comes to being sustainable. It starts with Brands like Sahara Bridal that use rPET and by conscious Brides choosing a ‘made to order’ option and asking how sustainable their Bridal piece is. Let's enter a new Bridal fashion era. Where emotional connections, handmade designs and slow fashion are embraced and celebrated.
